Expansive Riverfront Property in Westmoreland Permanently Conserved

A large agricultural property stretching more than a mile along the Connecticut River in southwestern New Hampshire is now permanently conserved.

The property, Chickering Farm, has been passed down through six generations in a single family, according to the Monadnock Conservancy.

“We are considering this our most important farmland project to date,” said Stacy Cibula, conservation project manager. “We have never worked on a project this big or this expensive.”

The non-profit raised about $1.4 million in private and public funds to protect the land.

It was an easy sell to donors, Cibula said, because of the property’s clear value to the region.

“I mean it has everything,” she said. “It has over a mile of river frontage. It has amazing wildlife habitat. It’s stunningly beautiful. It’s a working farm. It has amazing agricultural soils. And it’s huge.”

The terms of the conservation agreement protect the land from development, but farming and recreation can continue.

Note: This story has been corrected. An earlier version said the farm had been in the family for nine generations. It's been in the family for six.
