Five Hikers Rescued In White Mountains After Activating Beacon

Winter has arrived in the higher elevations of New Hampshire, and with it, cold weather rescues. A group of five hikers was rescued from a cold trail in the White Mountains National Forest Sunday night.

State conservation officers say the five hikers were all in their early 20s, from Massachusetts and Rhode Island. They were two days in to a planned three-day hike near Carter Dome, south of Gorham, when the temperature dropped.

The hikers activated their emergency beacon and called 911 from the secluded Black Angel trail. They said their clothes and sleeping bags were wet, and they were struggling in the cold and steep terrain.

Rescuers met the group on a nearby trail and gave them warm clothes and hot drinks, before helping them back to the main road.

The state says it's a reminder that hikers should now be prepared for winter conditions in the higher elevations of Northern New England.
