Mayberry Joins Mowers and Fowler in GOP 1st CD Primary

Dan Tuohy

The Republican primary to choose a nominee to take on incumbent Democratic Congressman Chris Pappas is getting crowded. A former Dover city councilor who was also vice chair of the New Hampshire Republican Party is the latest candidate to announce his entry into the race.

Matt Mayberry is the third Republican to get into the race, and the second this week. He's served in the Air Force, worked as a realtor, and helped found the New Hampshire chapter of the log cabin Republicans, a pro-LGBT Republican group.

Mayberry is 54, and has been a GOP activist for years. He says he'll bring the work ethic of 1st District voters to Congress.

"Their values are not being reflected in that seat in Washington right now," Mayberry said. "It's time for a change, and instead of looking at other people to lead, I look to myself, and I'll succeed."

Mayberry's candidacy has been endorsed by eight current GOP state senators, and former Gov. Craig Benson.

His entrance into the race came a day after former Trump administration state department official Matt Mowers declared his candidacy.

Mowers, 30, lives in Bedford. Before moving to New Hampshire to take a job with the Republican State Committee, Mowers was a political aide to former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

Seabrook state Rep. William Fowler is also running in the Republican primary.
